From Overwhelmed to Empowered: An Evidence-Based Reading Roadmap
A step-by-step, systematic reading program for exhausted but determined parents of dyslexic students who feel like they’re failing their child—despite doing everything they can—and are ready to intervene and see their child thrive.
Gain Confidence as a Parent
You love the idea of your child having both the confidence and the skills to pick up a book and reading it independently.
Â
And you know that to end their daily struggle and build their self-esteem, you need a system that actually fits your life and their brain.
But you're not currently seeing progress that matches the effort they are putting in.
If you're like most parents, you're still struggling to figure out what your child really needs and how to tell whether or not their current interventions are even working—it is exhausting, I know.
At this point, you may be thinking, "Is there a better way???"
A way to finally see your child’s confidence grow. A way to teach in a way that actually sticks. A way to know their hard work is finally paying off.
Good news >>> There is a way to guide your child to reading success—without tears, boredom, or guesswork.
You’ve been told to “wait and see.”
But your child’s brain—and their future—can’t afford to wait.
Imagine what it will feel like when:
🦉 Your child picks up a book and begins to read—with growing confidence and genuine joy.
🦉 You see them make measurable progress using tools grounded in how their brain is wired to learn.
🦉 You understand the sequence in which reading skills must develop—and how to meet your child exactly where they are, neurologically and emotionally.
🦉 You have one complete system that covers all the essential sub-skills in reading—in one seamless lesson.
🦉 You feel confident advocating for the right support because you know which subskills matter, how to measure them, and what evidence-based instruction should look like.
🦉 You stop second-guessing and start accelerating their progress with a system that integrates decoding, language comprehension, spelling, and fluency—seamlessly.
🦉 You finally have one clear roadmap that doesn’t just teach reading—it nurtures motivation, skills, and self-worth along the way.
🦉 Your child feels seen, respected, and supported in a way that honors both their strengths and their challenges.
Because reading success isn’t just about phonics or practice
—it’s about teaching the whole child with an approach that is as structured as it is compassionate, as evidence-based as it is empowering.

HEY THERE,
I'm Jennifer Dunn
I spend my days working with dyslexic students and their families—because overcoming learning differences isn’t a solo mission. It’s a team effort.
I'm a 20-year veteran educator with advanced degrees in Special Education and Literacy, and I've dedicated my career to supporting students with language-based learning differences. Over the years, I’ve been extensively trained in evidence-based programs like Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, Wilson, Project Read, and more.Â
But my experience isn’t just professional—it’s personal. I’m also the mother of two dyslexic children, and I know firsthand how overwhelming, emotional, and confusing this journey can be for families.Â
That’s why I founded Never Dunn Learning—to bridge the gap between what struggling readers need and what families are often told. My mission is to empower both children and their parents with the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to create meaningful, lasting progress—at home and beyond.

Success Stories

“One little sticker chart completely changed our dynamic. My son’s confidence skyrocketed—we got more done that first week than we had in months before. Teaching your own kids is hard, but teaching your own dyslexic kid is another game altogether. This class truly gave me the skills to meet my son where he was at, and teach him the way he needed so that he could become a fluent reader.”

“The course broke down strategies in such a simple way that I saw immediate results. My son used to cry when I tried to teach him to read, but now he asks to do reading sessions first. The difference is incredible. The focus on the whole child as a person and a learner is game changing, honestly.”

“This isn’t just a reading program, it’s a masterclass in how to support and understand a dyslexic learner. I now have insights into my daughter’s brain and behavior that help me both teach her effectively and parent with greater empathy and intention. If you are on the fence, take the class. I have tried so many things before, there is nothing like this out there. You will feel the heart and support in this program right away, and you will be inspired by it.”
In the coming days, I’ll be sharing a comprehensive, evidence-based approach designed specifically for parents of dyslexic learners—one that integrates all critical reading subskills through a neurosequential framework rooted in how the brain actually processes language.
This isn’t just another piecemeal solution. It’s a supportive, step-by-step system that empowers you to confidently guide your child’s reading journey—with clarity, compassion, and tools that truly make a difference.
INTRODUCING...DIY Dyslexia
DIY Dyslexia: A Roadmap for Parents
The most practical, neuroscience-aligned roadmap that teaches you, the parent, how to integrate all essential reading skills—from phonics to fluency to comprehension—in the sequence the brain actually learns.
PHASE #1
Preparation
Build the foundation your child’s brain—and their confidence—needs for lasting progress.
What’s covered in this module and why it matters:
In this first step, you’ll learn how to prepare your child for reading success by aligning instruction with their brain’s natural learning sequence. This phase ensures that every future lesson is purposeful, connected, and grounded in how dyslexic brains actually learn best.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Use a neurosequential framework to align teaching with how the brain develops and integrates reading subskills
-
Conduct targeted, skill-based informal assessments that show you exactly where to begin and how to track progress
-
Build Orton-Gillingham-style lessons using systematic, multisensory methods that reinforce learning through repetition and variation
-
Design lessons with process goals that keep your child focused, motivated, and free from shame
-
Implement positive behavior strategies that create a safe, supportive learning environment
-
Teach the 44 phonemes in English and sequence them using a comprehensive phonics skill list
-
Use game-based learning techniques to make practice joyful and neurologically sticky
After finishing Phase One, you’ll:
- Have a complete picture of your child’s strengths and skill gaps, and know exactly what to teach first
- Create structured, repeatable lessons that are developmentally appropriate and emotionally encouraging
- Feel confident that your approach is evidence-based, neuroaligned, and tailored to your child’s actual learning needs—not guesswork

PHASE #2
Teaching
Deliver structured, brain-aligned reading instruction that integrates all key subskills for lasting mastery.
What’s covered in this module and why it matters:
In this phase, you’ll begin teaching—using high-impact, evidence-based methods that honor both the sequence of brain development and the structure of the English language. You’ll learn how to break down reading into manageable, teachable parts while weaving together decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and morphology in a way that supports whole-brain learning.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Teach phonograms systematically, with a focus on leveraging story and visuals to build decoding skills and fluency
-
Use a high-low remediation model to meet your child where they are and make sure they don’t get left behind
-
Integrate fluency practice throughout instruction—not as an afterthought—so words become automatic and effortless
-
Introduce foundational elements like consonants, digraphs, short vowels, and word families in a neurologically sound sequence
-
Teach vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and rules like the C-rule and G-rule to clarify confusing letter patterns
-
Break down the six syllable types and practice how to recognize and decode them in real reading
-
Introduce morphology (prefixes, suffixes, roots) to expand vocabulary and help students recognize meaning within words
-
Lay the foundation for strong spelling and vocabulary instruction by building word awareness from the inside out
After finishing Phase 2, you’ll:
-
Be able to deliver high-quality, systematic, and sequential reading lessons using an individualized scope and sequence
-
Seamlessly integrate decoding, fluency, and vocabulary so your child builds real reading stamina and confidence
-
Understand how to scaffold instruction across all the essential components of the Reading Rope—and help your child connect them
PHASE #3
Application & Mastery
Solidify your child’s reading progress by mastering the full scope and sequence, and tailor interventions to their unique learning needs.
What’s covered in this module and why it matters:
In this phase, you’ll move beyond basic decoding and fluency to apply the full scope and sequence of reading skills in a way that addresses your child’s specific challenges. You’ll learn how to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to remove barriers and customize instruction so that your child’s unique blocks to academic success are systematically eliminated.
You’ll also explore how to thoughtfully integrate technology—using tools and programs I personally recommend and use in my teaching practice—to enhance learning without distraction or risk.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Review and solidify the scope and sequence of the program for consistent, comprehensive progress
-
Implement Universal Design for Learning to proactively address and remove learning obstacles unique to your child
-
Tailor lessons and materials to your child’s strengths and needs for accelerated mastery and confidence
-
Explore a bonus session on leveraging technology: introduction to trusted educational tools, software, and systems
-
Learn an ethical framework for technology use—empowering your child to harness tech safely and effectively, understanding its benefits and potential pitfalls
After finishing Phase Three, you’ll:
-
Confidently deliver a fully integrated reading program personalized to your child’s learning profile
-
Remove roadblocks that have slowed your child’s progress and build sustainable, independent reading skills
-
Feel empowered to use technology as a learning partner rather than a distraction or risk
-
Know exactly how to support your child in continuing their reading growth with purpose and clarity

BONUS #2: "What to Say Instead" Language Prompts
$45 Value
Retrain Reading Habits. Rebuild Confidence. Reset the Tone.
Struggling readers don’t just fall behind in skills—they often develop maladaptive coping behaviors to survive the daily frustration of decoding. Skipping words, guessing, melting down, avoidance—these are not signs of laziness. They’re survival strategies. But if we don’t address them head-on, they become deeply entrenched and slow down even the best interventions.
Rooted in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and the growth mindset framework, this tool gives you clear, compassionate scripts to use in the moment when your child:
🎖️Gets stuck and wants to give up
🎖️Guesses at words
🎖️Becomes anxious or resistant
🎖️Tries to avoid or rush through reading
🎖️Feels ashamed
Instead of correcting, criticizing, or rescuing, you’ll have a library of responses that acknowledge emotion, redirect behavior, and train new, more effective habits.
Â
Why This Matters:
- Interrupts the old scripts that reinforce avoidance and learned helplessness
- Teaches kids what to try next, not just what they did wrong
- Builds emotional safety and trust, which are essential for cognitive growth
- Creates consistency across home and learning spaces, so kids don’t have to guess at what’s expected

BONUSÂ #3: Never Dunn Learning Spelling Rules Kit
$55 value
Clear Rules. Consistent Language. Confident Spellers.
Many struggling readers rely on guessing or memorization when spelling—a symptom of weak pattern recognition and unclear rule understanding. The NDL Spelling Rules Kit helps rebuild that foundation by making the logic of English spelling explicit, memorable, and teachable.
This comprehensive resource includes:
- Visual Rule Posters – Clean, student-friendly visuals for each key rule
- Rule Explanations – Clear, parent- and kid-friendly language rooted in evidence-based methodology
-  Targeted Worksheets – Practice activities that reinforce each rule through multisensory repetition
Designed for home or instructional use, this kit aligns with evidence-based principles to support mastery of rules like: doubling consonants, silent-e, c/k usage, -ck endings, and more.
Perfect for daily review, targeted reteaching, or proactive instruction, the Spelling Rules Kit empowers children to encode with confidence—because when students understand why a word is spelled a certain way, they’re far less likely to guess.

What makes DIY Dyslexia different isn’t a magic, missing ingredient
— it’s the basic understanding that we have that we’re teaching children, not programs. Children are human. Humans are complex. Teaching little humans well requires more than a script and a box of tricks—it requires understanding, connection, strategy, and best practices.
We begin where success truly starts:
⚡ With mindset,
⚡ With regulation,
⚡ With relationship.
Then, and only then, do we move into specific strategies for learning and evidence-based tools for execution.

Question #1: Why would I choose this program when I could just hire a tutor?
Question #2: I don’t have enough time to take on a whole new teaching program. How can I fit this in?
Question #3: Is this program really more affordable than hiring professional tutors or specialized schools?
Question #4: There are so many “dyslexia programs” out there—how do I know this one really works?
Question #5: I’m not a teacher — how can I possibly teach my child something this complex?
Question #6: Can you tell me a little more about how it works?
Question #7: Is it really risk-free? What if it doesn’t work for my child?
